The Newfangled DA -- What the frick, yo?

Wed Jul 15, 2009, 6:02 PM
So I've been basically absent from DA for the better part of 4 years. 4 years that just happen to coincide with 4 years of being an undergrad at a large public university.

Using my newfound liberal arts education and enhanced sense of irony I've decided to record a few thoughts about DA, then and now.

5. Damn there are a lot of Daily Deviations.

I'm in no place whatsoever to criticize some of the excellent work that gets selected, but back in my day (you know, the ones with the uphill snowwalking and whatnot) there used to be only 4 DDs everyday and they were invariably awesome and faveworthy. Now, not so much. This surge in DDs also throws into sharp relief the fact that I am light years away (in both, time and distance (yes I am incorrectly using light years as a measure of time despite my college education)) from creating anything that would be considered as a possible back up maybe perhaps to a DD. At least when there were only four, I had an excuse. Denial is no longer a river in Egypt. Well it is, but it is also now a useless coping mechanism.

4. News messages
If "Shit-ton" was not a legitimate unit of measurement before, it is now. As in, I had a shit-ton of news messages in my inbox whenever I occasionally logged into my account.

3. The "Way Back" browsing feature.

K, more whining. Back in the aforementioned uphill snowwalking days, one of my favorite activities on DA was to go to specific galleries -- especially digital art galleries -- and marvel at how that genre was changing in front of my eyes by browsing the very earliest pieces. Now I have to pay for that? Poo on you DA. Poo on you. You really are the money grubbing megawebsite that all the edgy, fashionable people (that nevertheless continue to use the site) always accuse you of being. Yes, my enhanced sense of irony has picked up on all the irony oozing from this post.

2. Jark :jarkorig: and Enayla

What's the story with Jark? I'm clearly missing something, that guy used to be the face of DA. Also Enayla was by far my favorite artist on here and her works used to dot the "most popular of all time" gallery. This one is totes not DA's fault (it's your fault ordinary, unappreciative DA user!!) but i miss her :(

1. Collections?

<whiny>Duuuude</whiny>. I used to get so stoked whenever someone faved one of my pieces. Seriously, most people were fairly selective of what they faved, meaning that each one was reason for celebration. In fact I would return the favor by relentlessly commenting on the Favers artwork like the diligent Favee that I was. Now there are collections, and people use them liberally. They get my hopes up at first, only to dash them as I slowly realize that people have hundreds of images in them...oh, and the collections themselves can be faved! If I had done well in Calc I would make a witty reference to derivatives right now about people deriving :+fav: glory by collecting others' work. I did not do well in calc.

I seriously doubt anyone is still reading so I'm going to make up a dirty sounding word for fun: fwingle-koos. As in, I can't believe she buggled my shimplekwat while we were fwingle-koosing. Made me horny and hungry all at once.

  • Mood: Angsty
  • Listening to: Old Hindi music.

  • Watching: Up...god I loved that movie.

Haha, you sound like a real dA veteran. Unfortunately, I'm fairly new (even if I consider the years I just lurked, without an account), so I don't really notice all these changes. Personally, I'd like to be able to use the "way back" feature too. I'm pretty curious about what sort of art trends have come and gone (or stayed :XD:). I completely agree with your comment about the collections. That's new enough that even I recognize it. I'm always so excited when someone favs one of my works, but if it's in a collection with a dozen other works... not so hyped. :p

Interesting word... "fwingle-koos". :O
:iconnitinnnnn:
haha you werent supposed to see that! thanks for taking the time to read :) I don't know if i'd call myself a vet, i just happen to have been around since 2002 doing this and that. DA has helped me a lot :D
